India’s first Hydrogen Fuel train is going to run between Sonipat and Jind, which will mark a significant step toward zero-emission transportation. Learn more about hydrogen fuel technology, its environmental benefits, and plans for hydrogen trains in India.
Water-powered train
Indian Railways has taken a big step towards clean and green energy. From December’24 to January’25, the country’s first hydrogen train will start running 90 km between Sonipat and Jind. This will be India’s first pollution-free train, and its speed will be around 140 km per hour. This hydrogen-powered train is a significant advancement in green energy rail projects.
Special features of the train
- Hydrogen fuel technology: The hydrogen-powered train will generate electricity from hydrogen and oxygen through hydrogen fuel cells. Electricity of 2.4 megawatts (MW) will be required to pull off 10 coaches of the train. The train will have 2 power plants as power sources.
- Pollution-free: When we compare this to a traditional diesel train, the hydrogen train will emit neither carbon dioxide nor smoke but only steam and water, greatly benefiting our environment and paving the way for eco-friendly rail travel.
- Emission savings: A 90 km Diesel train emits 964 kg of carbon for the same distance. On the other hand, hydrogen trains with this eco-friendly technology will have zero emissions.
Construction and Plant
A plant is being built to store 3,000 kg of hydrogen at Jind railway station. The train will require 40,000 liters of water every hour for which underground storage is also being built at Jind railway station. Oxygen and hydrogen will be separated from water and Hydrogen fuel will be prepared from this. It will be stored in the tanks of the hydrogen depot, and from here hydrogen gas will be filled in the train through the pipeline. Machines have arrived to operate the train.
Plan for Heritage and Hill Route
Indian Railways plans to start 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hill routes after the trial is successful. Hydrogen trains will initially have 8 to 10 coaches. It is likely that after the trial run in December’24-January’25, it will start running regularly in this financial year.
International View
This initiative positions India as a leader in green transportation, joining countries like Sweden, China, Germany, and France in adopting hydrogen rail technology.
